Recently, I spent the morning labeling and stamping postcards for a promo
mailing. Sometimes I hire someone to do this for or with me, but most of the time, I do not.
I like the feeling of touching every postcard and thinking of my clients as I read their names on the mailing labels.
It usually fills me with a flood of warm feelings. Unlike a "traditional" entrepreneur,
who is likely to look at a promo mailing as just a way to bring in money, I look at it as an opportunity to energetically
& emotionally reconnect with some old friends. (I suppose this is why I call myself a New Age entrepreneur,
and not just an entrepreneur.)
One could argue that I'd be better off
paying the measly amount it takes to hire someone to do the postcard mailing for me. One could say that
this would free me up to do more "important" things, like writing this newsletter. I suppose
there is some validity to this argument. However, I also believe in the sacredness of the mundane, and
the importance of periodically reconnecting back with my clients' energy, even if it is just through touching a label
with their name on it.
I also believe in enjoying the process of
achievement as much as the goal itself. If I can't have as much fun promoting an event as I can actually
doing the event, then I am probably not going to be interested in it. I'm not saying that every step
along the way has to be my favorite activity, but if I can't enjoy the process of doing something, then to me,
it is not worth doing.
Some people believe that the ends justify the means,
and that you have to work hard & put off your happiness for today in order to be able to relax & be happy in the future.
I don't buy into this.
This is not to say
that I am opposed to work (any one who knows me knows that I'm not afraid of a little hard work). However,
I don't think that choosing to live a life that makes you unhappy today is likely to lead to a life that will make you
happy in the future.
In fact, as far as I have observed,
just the opposite is true: People who spend most of their lives chasing & doing things that aren't
making them happy now usually remain unhappy, even after they have achieved the goal that they thought was going
to make them happy in the first place.
Metaphysically
speaking, the means creates the end. This means that you cannot create peace with war, or prosperity
with a poverty consciousness. It also means that you cannot create a life of passion & inspiration
by living a life of conformity and boredom.
If you
want to live the "good life", you have to start right now, in the present moment, by living with as much happiness,
joy, enthusiasm, and passion that you can. If you have a dream, start to live it TODAY. Don't
fool yourself into believing that your dream will come true after you've done everything else that you were "supposed"
to do. For if you spend your days concentrating only on what you are "supposed" to do (instead
of what brings you joy), you are likely to end up living a life of never-ending "supposed tos".
Instead of living a life of "supposed tos",
begin to enjoy the process of success today. Enjoy every little step along the way of building your business, even if
it is just something as small as mailing a postcard or writing down your goals. Don't be afraid to get started,
even if you can't get started "big". When you say "yes" to the small opportunities in life,
the Universe will begin to bring you even more of the "bigger" and more exciting opportunities.
