When you look at the history of countries and civilizations, you realize that many history-altering decisions were random choices that had a profound effect on the subsequent path of that country for hundreds of years. Jared Diamond in his epic book, Guns, Germs and Steel, The Fates of Human Societies, points out that America could have been settled by the Chinese instead of Europeans. “China led the world in political power, navigation, and control of the seas in the early 15^th century. It sent treasure fleets, each consisting of hundreds of 400-foot long ships with total crews of up to 28,000 across the Indian Ocean as far as the east coast of Africa, decades before Columbus’s three puny ships crossed the narrow Atlantic Ocean to the America’s east coast.” Why didn’t the Chinese continue on to America and solidify its position as the world power? Political factions changed, altering the power structure. The new controlling rulers made the random decision to close down the ship yards. This act changed the course of China and world history forever.

People are like countries. Think about how many random decisions we make.  Then we make adjustments to balance out the consequences of our actions.
